2013 North Tyneside 10K Road Race

Application forms are now available for the North Tyneside 10K Road Race - a
contender for one of the UK's most scenic road races, which sees elite athletes and
field runners tackling the tough coastal course.

The race, which takes place on Easter Sunday (March 31) 2013, begins at The Parks
Sports Centre in North Shields, taking in the Fish Quay, and locations including
Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and a long stretch of coastline before finishing at St
Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

Runners travel from all over the UK and many European destinations to compete in the
race, and with a strict limit of 2,200 participants event organisers are urging people to
get their entries in quickly to avoid disappointment.

Cllr George Westwater, cabinet member for Community and Regulatory Services "The
North Tyneside 10K Road Race has established itself as a well regarded event on the
regional and national road race calendar.

"The 2013 race will see the ninth annual event and we expect to once again see a
fantastic response from individuals and running clubs from throughout the UK.

"Due to the nature of the route, we have a strict limit of 2,200 participants so we are
urging people to get their entries in quickly to avoid missing out."

Last year's race was won by Ethiopian-born Tadele Geremew Mulugeta who finished in
30 minutes and 48 seconds. The first female over the finishing line was former Elswick
Harrier, now London-based Clapham Chasers club runner, Justina Heslop who
completed the race in 33 minutes and 56 seconds.

The 6.2-mile run is organised by North Tyneside Council in partnership with Start
Fitness and North Shields Polytechnic and attracts people of all ages and abilities. The
event is sponsored by TyneMet College and Northern Pure who provide drinking water
throughout the race.

Jon Vincent, Principal and Chief Executive at Tyne Metropolitan College, said: "Working
with the local council and community is very exciting for us and we are delighted that
so many competitors take part in this event. There is a real synergy between events
such as this and the college, especially our North East Sports Academy (NESA)."

The entry fee for a UK Athletics Club member is £15 and a non-club member fee is £17.
There is a range of prizes, both for individuals and teams. Each person taking part will
receive a goody bag at the end and participants must be aged over 15-years.
